The international community will commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women on November 25th, 2019. The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence for the period November 25th – December 10th is being commemorated under the theme “Orange the World: Generation Equality Stands Against Rape”. As part of the national campaign, a launch and press conference is planned for November 25th commencing at 10:00 a.m. at the Ministry of Health conference room. This activity will be used as an opportunity to convey a united and national condemnation of rape and sexual violence that are perpetuated against women and girls.
Statements would be delivered by the Honourable Frederick Stephenson, Minister of National Mobilisation, Social Development, Family, Gender, Persons with Disabilities and Youth, Mrs. Nicole Slack-Liburd, PAHO Country Programme Specialist for St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and representatives from Civil Society Organizations.
As part of the 16 days campaign, the National Commission on Gender-Based Violence (which was established by Cabinet in 2017) will undertake activities to heighten and galvanize awareness about gender-based violence specifically on child abuse, domestic violence and sexual violence.
It would comprise capacity building workshops with police and nurses, church service, whistle-stops from Richmond to Fancy, showcase at the Crime Prevention Exhibition, school presentations, and awareness sessions within institutions such as Her Majesty’s Prison.
