A 103-year-old St Vincent and the Grenadines national has won her battle with the dreaded COVID-19 virus.
The Caribbean island is battling mounting COVID cases and a death toll of 33 at the time of this publication.
Marion Williams was admitted to an isolation facility on September 14 and spent 24 days battling the virus as an unvaccinated patient.
According to the CDC, unvaccinated people are about 29 times more likely to be hospitalized with Covid-19 than those who are fully vaccinated.
According to news reports, family members say Williams is a woman of faith always praying and singing. Her diet consists mainly of ground provision, the report stated.
Ground provisions are used in West Indian nations to describe several traditional root vegetable staples such as yams, sweet potatoes, dasheen root (taro), eddoes and cassava.
The foods are a large part of the diet among islanders.
The 103-year-old woman was released from isolation on October 7, just two days after her birthday.
According to the CDC, older adults are more likely to get very sick from COVID-19. Getting very ill means that older adults with COVID-19 might need hospitalization, intensive care, or a ventilator to help them breathe, or they might even die.
The risk increases for people in their 50s and increases in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.
The country has reported cases of the Mu, Gamma and Delta variants.
