Tens of thousands of customers in New England and New York lost power after a strong storm dumped 2 feet of snow in some spots.
According to poweroutage.us, which records outages across the country, more than 160,000 New England consumers were without power as of the afternoon.
Snowfall made travel difficult and hampered restoration work. Doug Foley, Eversource’s New Hampshire electric operations president, said snowy roadways made it hard for workers to assess damage and conduct repairs.
“We’re still repairing systems in areas where heavy, wet snow is falling, and hundreds of additional crews are travelling to New Hampshire to help,” Foley wrote in an email.
Eversource has restored electricity to 61,000 New Hampshire customers by Saturday afternoon, but 40,000 remained without power.
Green Mountain Power, which serves Vermont, said more disruptions are possible because the snow won’t melt in the next few days.
Mike Burke, the electric company’s VP of field operations, said clearing downed trees was sluggish and tough.
Many communities in the region received more than a foot of snow, according to the National Weather Service.
