Sir Gerald Watt, Speaker of the Antigua and Barbuda House of Representatives, has suspended Asot Michael, Parliamentary Representative for the St Peter constituency, for the next three sittings.
Sir Gerald claimed that the legislator was engaging in “hooliganism” behavior.
The chain of events began when Michael objected to a remark made by Prime Minister Gaston Browne during a Bill presentation by Attorney General Steadroy Benjamin.
Michael clashed loudly with the Speaker, who had already told him that he would not accept his actions for much longer.
“Move the member for St Peter out right now,” the Speaker instructed the Sergeant at Arms, adding, “If you need extra help, get it and get him out of here.”
The Speaker, Michael cried across the floor, should resign because he is biased.
“You said nothing to the Prime Minister when he threatened me over the UK [issue].” You are a biased man who should return home. You should consider retiring. You are taking up room in the House for young people…you are biased…” Michael stated as he exited Parliament.
Members of Parliament on the government’s side of the aisle promptly voted to suspend him from three consecutive Parliamentary sittings for abuse of the Chair.
