It is anticipated that Port Kingstown, located in St Vincent (SVG), will experience a growth of 9.5% in the number of cruise ship visits during the cruise season of 2023-2024.
On Monday, Minister of Tourism Carlos James expressed the possibility of the numbers either being stable or declining as a result of cancellations.
Nevertheless, the preliminary data indicates that the island is anticipated to have a future surge in the number of port visits made to Port Kingston, accommodating ships with passenger capacities ranging from 1500 to over 3000.
“What is interesting about our cruise numbers, and I just had the tourism planner crunch some of the numbers? These are tentative bookings we have so far to Port Kingston; it didn’t capture all of the ports, but I wanted to focus on the larger ships that are coming”.
“So far, calls to Port Kingston We are expecting to see a 9.5% increase in calls to Port Kingston. And these are larger ships coming, and that again is a sign as to the growth within the cruise sector.”
According to James, the year 2022 had a notable surge in cruise tourism. Analyzing data from 23 reporting destinations, it becomes evident that St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) stood out as the sole location experiencing a rise in visitation during the initial five months of 2023.
“The numbers were showing growth in all of the destinations; however, of the seven destinations that recorded numbers between January and May, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines was the only destination to record an increase in visits in the first five months of 2023, which is the latter part of the 2022–2023 season, showing a peak of 14.4% beyond our 2019 numbers”.
“Facts will show that while 2019 was really the benchmark here, where Cruise is concerned, in the first quarter of the year, we eclipsed those numbers we had from 2019 and went up by 14.4%”.
