- Patricia Villegas Rejects Threats from SouthCom against teleSUR
On Sunday, teleSUR President Patricia Villegas rejected Gen. Laura Richardson, the leader of the United States Southern Command (SouthCom),’s threats against her multimedia outlet.
Richardson discussed the significance of disinformation tactics in weakening democracy in Latin America in an interview released by a Paraguayan media station.
Instead of addressing what Washington has done to address it over the last two centuries, the SouthCom commander criticised independent media outlets that do not align with US goals.
Richardson also slammed Russia Today, Sputnik, and teleSUR in October, claiming that they propagate unconfirmed material and “undermine democracies.”
Such assertions seek to encourage audiences to remove themselves from media outlets that do not share the imperialistic hegemonic ideology propagated by major corporate media.
“Mrs. Richardson continues to share her views on topics that do not concern her… She does not frighten us! “She will not stop us,” claimed the teleSUR president in reaction to the SouthCom’s smear campaign.
“She has targeted various media outlets twice this year.””The world’s most powerful army weighing in on journalistic work,” Villegas cautioned, noting that this occurs at a time when non-Washington-controlled media outlets are reporting on the genuine events unfolding in Gaza, where Israeli occupation forces have killed nearly 90 journalists.
“Just like 18 years ago, we are determined to build the largest communication platform in Latin America and the Caribbean,” Villegas said.
“We do not pause or waste time in this endeavour, Mrs. Richardson.” Your words only serve to reinforce our belief that we are on the right track. We urge the peoples of the world to be cautious in the face of such threats,” teleSUR president stated.
