- Missing cruise ship passenger found after spending 2 nights in forest
A cruise ship passenger who became disoriented while trekking in Grenada’s jungle on Monday, 18 December 2023, was found alive but bruised after spending two nights in the Grand Etang Forest reserve area trying to find her way out.
Heyse Celine, a French citizen, was a passenger aboard the Costa Fortuna cruise liner that docked in Grenada on Monday, according to Mathias Dorel, the French Honourary Consul in Grenada. Celine decided to go on the hike without a tour guide.
“She took a bus to Grand Etang and inquired about a waterfall.” She couldn’t find the waterfall and got lost on the way back, but she was determined to find a way out. The next day, she called her daughter in France, who contacted the cruise company, who contacted the police, and the hunt began’, he explained.
“She slept in the mountains for two nights.” On Wednesday morning, she was apprehended by police and taken to the hospital. She has scratches and bruises and is tired, but we believe she will be alright.” Dorel indicated that he would assist her in making plans to return to France by the weekend.
On December 19, police issued a missing person report with no specifics about Celine’s whereabouts other than that she had arrived on the island the day before, had last spoken with a friend on that day, and had not been seen or heard from since. Police also advised hotel, Airbnb, and flat owners to keep an eye out for the 51-year-old female.
Celine was located, according to a second announcement published on December 20. Police are said to have utilised a drone in their hunt, and it was the drone that found her on Wednesday morning in the highlands of Birchgrove, a village on the outskirts of the Grand Etang Forest Reserve.
