- Venezuela Rejects Arrival of British Military Ship HMS Trent
The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela urges Guyanese authorities to immediately withdraw the British Navy’s HMS Trent and to avoid military involvement in the territorial dispute.
Venezuela said the HMS Trent’s landing in Guyana ‘becomes an act of hostile provocation and a violation of the recent Argyle Declaration.’
In solidarity of CARICOM member Guyana, the UK sent the Royal Navy Patrol Ship last week. This follows recent peace discussions in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, when Guyana and Venezuela created a Joint Declaration of Argyle for Dialogue and Peace to reduce hostilities.
HMS Trent will visit regional ally and Commonwealth partner Guyana later this month as part of her Atlantic patrol mission deployment, a Ministry of Defence official said.
Venezuela calls the military vessel a major issue.
It also warns CARICOM and CELAC members that these actions are contrary to the spirit of peace and understanding with which Venezuela attended the December 14 meeting in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, to which we must return immediately and continue direct dialogue between the parties.”
Venezuela retains all steps within its Constitution and International Law to defend its marine and territorial integrity.
