- FIREARM SAFETY AND LEGAL COMPLIANCE DURING NEW YEAR CELEBRATIONS IN SVG
As the New Year approaches, the RSVGPF urges all licensed firearm holders to adhere strictly to firearm safety and legal regulations. The misuse of firearms, particularly during celebrations, poses significant risks to public safety and legal consequences.
Prohibition of Gun Salutes:
We remind you that gun salutes, especially to ring in the New Year, are not only dangerous but also illegal. The Firearms Act CAP 386 Section 17(1) explicitly states: “A person shall not discharge any firearm or ammunition on or within one hundred yards of any public road or in any public place except – (a) in the protection of his person or property or the person or property of some other person (c) with the permission of the Commissioner of Police.”
Legal Consequences:
Violating these regulations can lead to severe legal repercussions. Furthermore, Section 17(1) of the Firearms Act also authorizes police officers to enter premises without a warrant if there’s reasonable cause to believe a violation has occurred, seizing any related firearms or ammunition for investigation and legal proceedings.
Responsibility at Social Events:
Firearm holders are urged to be responsible at social events, especially during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Avoid leaving firearms in vehicles when attending ‘weapon-free’ events. Instead, make prior arrangements with event promoters or security companies to safeguard weapons, or better yet, leave them securely at home.
Compliance with Police Requests:
According to Section 29 of the Firearms Act, a police officer may require any person carrying a firearm or ammunition in a public place to produce their license or permit. Failure to comply, or refusing to allow examination of the firearm, constitutes an offense, and the officer may seize the firearm or ammunition.
Enforcement against Illegal Firearms:
In alignment with our commitment to uphold the law, the RSVGPF will strictly enforce regulations against illegal firearms. Anyone found in possession of firearms contrary to the provisions of the Firearms Act will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. This measure is essential to ensure public safety and uphold the rule of law.
Let’s ring in the New Year with safety and respect for the law. The RSVGPF counts on your support for a peaceful celebration. Here’s to a responsible, joyous, and safe New Year for all.
