- Parika Market vendor beaten to death
Amanda Persaud, a woman from Parika, East Bank Essequibo, who was killed by her ex-lover, was battered, according to the Guyana Police Force on Sunday, with a piece of wood he picked up from the road.
According to police headquarters, on Sunday morning, Guradean Lallaram, a 39-year-old mason from Parika Façade, approached Persaud, 25, while riding an electric scooter.
After a furious dispute between the two, the man got off the scooter, grabbed a piece of wood from the side of the road, and gave the victim a single lash to the head, sending her to the ground.
Then, it is said, he stood over her and gave her multiple wooden lashes to the face, causing her to bleed heavily.
A local citizen documented the entire thing on camera. The suspect abandoned the wood and rode off on the scooter, stopping only a short distance away to hide among some bushes.
Locals in the vicinity called the police right away. After the man’s hiding place was discovered, he was apprehended and brought to the Parika Police Station. The police also gathered up the piece of wood.
The victim’s sister, Devi Persaud, informed the News Room that Amanda and her decided to escape the violent environment, leading to the breakup of their relationship.
The woman claimed that Lallaram repeatedly abused her sister and made numerous threats. After seeing these incidents, Amanda’s family, who the pair shared housing with, counselled her to end the relationship and obtain a restraining order against him.
In the end, Devi said, she followed their advise, but since his family had promised to talk to him, she did not receive a restraining order. However, on Sunday, the man stood outside their house waiting for her to go so he could approach her in the market.
Police were provided with a recording of the incident, which exposed the graphic details.
