Yacht owners feared dead after escapees recaptured - Stolen Catamaran Mystery: Sailors Vanish After Theft in Grenada
Two sailors whose catamaran yacht ‘Simplicity‘ was stolen from Grand Anse Beach in Grenada and discovered near Walliabou Bay, St. Vincent, are still unaccounted for, and an investigation has been opened.
The vessel was commandeered by three Grenadians who were captured on Wednesday, February 21, in Petit Bordel, St. Vincent, after they escaped from Grenada police custody on February 19.
The sailors and owners of the ‘Simplicity’ who were only known as “Ralph and Cathy,” have since vanished, and Grenadian authorities now think they are dead.
The presumed deaths of the missing sailors are now linked to the apprehended escapees. It is thought that the sailors are Americans. Grenada Police said Thursday that investigators are now working on leads that imply the yacht’s two occupants were killed in the process.
According to CSSN, an inspection of the yacht revealed that it had been plundered, indicating that a violent incident had occurred.
“Copious volumes of blood were discovered in the master stateroom. Numerous personal belongings were also lost. Passports discovered onboard allowed police to contact the victims’ emergency contacts,” CSSN stated.
The yacht’s dinghy went missing and was subsequently found.
On Thursday, the RGPF stated that the inquiry is still in its early stages and that a team of senior investigators and a forensic specialist has been dispatched to St. Vincent to assist with it.
According to AIS data, the boat left Grenada at roughly 10 p.m. on Sunday, 18, from Grand Anse Beach. According to the Grenada Cruisers Information Facebook page, the vessel’s speed did not match that of the sailors, who are known as fair-weather sailors who travel at a glacial pace.
On Thursday, February 22, Boatwatch.org shared the following:
“Bollo for two sailors missing from the SV Simplicity since Sunday, February 19, 2024.” They are believed to have met with foul play somewhere between Grenada and St. Vincent. The SV was last seen anchored at Grand Anse Beach in Grenada.
The SV, a 48-foot St. Francis catamaran, was discovered on St. Vincent. Please keep an eye out for the missing sailors and report any sightings to local authorities or the Coast Guard.
Any additional information should be forwarded to Ken Goodings at 504-595-9417 in Grenada”.
The three (3) male escapees who were in police detention in Grenada before escaping were on charges of rape, robbery with violence, and other major crimes. Two (2) additional Grenadian nationals were detained during the police operation in St. Vincent.
