(By Ernesto Cooke) – The WPP team has been praised for what has been considered a miracle by affording a baby born here in St Vincent a chance at living a normal life.
While on their first mission for the year a team headed by Dr Jeffery Lukish carried out a complex surgery on a baby born without an anus.
The baby born to Vincentian parents spent some 7 hours in surgery where Dr Lukish and his team of experts constructed an anus and colon as the child had born without an outlet.
The surgery was done free of charge and took place on Wednesday 16th January 2019, at the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital.
This is the 13th year that the General Surgery team is travelling to St. Vincent, continuing to help close the gap in access to critical care for children in the Eastern Caribbean.
For the last six years the team has been led by Dr. Jeffery Lukish from Johns Hopkins Medicine and this year they were joined by students from Trinity School of Medicine, helping not just deliver care to children but provide real-world experience for the doctors of tomorrow.
