Last year, Sita Di Lyrical Diva shocked audiences at the International Bashment Soca Competition with her dynamic and powerful performance of Hammer. Hailing from St Vincent and Grenadines, the newcomer impressed the crowd with her stage presence and showmanship.
Sita is back for Crop Over 2019 with a new single – Sauce – and a reality television series, The Split Personality Life of Sita. The reality television show, which is filmed in St Vincent and the Grenadines, follows Sita’s interactions with her brother Austin Cain who is a Vincentian radio personality, Emona Thompson and guest appearances from Vincentian artistes.
The First Lady of Vincentian Dancehall doesn’t mince her words and her bold personality keeps the audience tuned in to the show which is streamed on STV Online. It will also be broadcast on CBC Channel 8 in mid-May.
In an interview with Bajan Vibes, Sita could not hide her excitement about embarking on this new venture. “I am excited because it was my dream and even though I thought about it in a big way, I didn’t know that things can materialize this quickly. I am also excited to showcase St Vincent and the Grenadines because I am also going to be highlighting our festivals and filming at our national sites so persons outside of St Vincent can see what we have to offer,” she shared.
She is using her reality television platform to not only share her music and highlight new artistes but also to discuss issues such as mental illness, discrimination against the LGBTQ community and sexual harassment in the workplace that are affecting St Vincent and the Caribbean region.
“I would also like to use my platform to highlight how difficult it is for us as women in the music industry because the industry is male-dominated all over the world… for us as females to make it, we are sometimes subjected to pressures and producers wanting to sleep with us, managers wanting to rob us of money,” she further revealed.
Sita disclosed that her decision to produce and star in a reality programme was viewed as taking quite the risk. The idea was met with disbelief by some who did not expect the programme to get off the ground.
“Producing a reality series is something different for the Caribbean folk because we are accustomed to viewing reality series on bigger television stations like VH1 and the other broadcasting stations. So, for a Caribbean national and an artiste to even think about producing a television series sounds far-fetched to some persons,” she revealed.
However, the opposition became a motivating force that pushed her to work harder to achieve her goal. “It taught me how to be patient and how to go after my dream because at the end of the day, it is my dream,” she added.
With the Crop Over Festival kicking off from June 8 and Vincy Mas scheduled to commence June 28, Sita is quite busy in the studio. So far, she has released Matey for Vincy Mas and Sauce for Crop Over.
