It is still early days, but St Vincent and the Grenadines’ Minister of Finance believes the country’s medicinal marijuana sector will provide a big boost to the Eastern Caribbean nation’s economy and exports.
Last month, the country handed its first licences for commercial medical cannabis cultivation to domestic and international enterprises.
Camillo Gonsalves told LOOP NEWS on the margins of a CARICOM Foreign Ministers conference, which coincided with the conclusion of Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta’s state visit to Barbados on Friday, that there was still some work to be done.
“We have just recently began awarding licences to licenced medicinal cannabis producers or those who intend to use medicinal cannabis for value-added production in the pharmaceutical field.
“What we as small states, or rather, what we in St Vincent and the Grenadines have decided is that as a small state, we are trying to carve out space for an industry in the cannabis area while remaining compliant with existing treaty obligations under international law,” he went on to say.
