Supporters and participants in the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission’s (NTRC) Annual My App Summer Program have praised the statutory body for its initiative, which introduces youth to the world of mobile app design.
Telecommunications providers Digicel and Flow, who sponsored the 5 week coding and design workshop that took place at the Petit Bordel Secondary School, lauded the NTRC for the initiative during the closing ceremony last week Wednesday.
Dionne Emtage, the representative of Digicel St Vincent, lauded the NTRC for the initiative, which she said prepared the participants for the future. She also challenged the youngsters to make the most of the opportunity given to them.
“I would like to use this opportunity to command the NTRC for hosting this program for yet another year, and we do encourage them to continue to provide exposure and enhance the technological skills of the Vincentian youths.
“I challenge each and every one of you to head back to your classrooms, homes and even your communities and share this information with your colleagues, and encourage them to join next year, and collectively work to implement what you would have learnt over the past week. I encourage you guys don’t take this lightly. All of us have poured out a lot to get this going; don’t let this go to waste.”
Emtage also reaffirmed her company’s commitment to giving back, and to strategically collaborate with the entities, government organizations, NGOs to develop initiatives and program in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Flow representative Nikala Williams also commended the NTRC for the program, and the students who participated in the program.
“Flow would like to commend the NTRC for the second annual initiative.
“With more and more youths becoming exposed to designing applications, the technological skills of our young generation will no doubt be enhanced, and thus create opportunities in excelling in this career and others.
“This exposure also guarantees a high standard for application production in St Vincent and the Grenadines and we’ve seen the product of this from the last my app competition. We are looking for great things coming out of this class.”
Kudos for the program were also given by program instructor Jason Alexis, Senator Carlos James, as well as the classes valedictorian Junior Kelly, who was grateful for the opportunity to gain a new life skill.
“The program was an educating program and very revitalizing. I developed a close relationship with everyone, and I believe I have the capability to develop a program based on what I learned here,” Kelly said.
NTRC Consumer and Public Relations Manager Keisha Gurley, thanked the sponsors and participants for their dedication to the project, which she indicated was geared towards exposing participants to code design mobile application.
Gurley indicated that the initiative is also used to introduce participants to the I-squared competition, which kicks off on September 16, 2016, and challenges students to develop technology themed ideas and applications.
“I would like to challenge all students to enter into our I-Squared competition, so that the skills that you have acquired in the My App Summer Program you will be able to impart it in the annual competition; so I look forward to seeing everyone I September,” Gurley said.
