The Calliaqua Anglican School is the most recent school to receive donations in the form of equipment from the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (NTRC). The equipment, which came in the form of a projector, white board, scanner, speakers and computers are valued at approximately EC$11,000 and were donated on April 20th, 2018 in a brief ceremony held at the school.
The computers are Chrome-based and equipped with Google Classroom. Google classroom is a free web service developed by Google for schools that aim to simplify creating, distributing and grading assignments in a paperless way. It also serves to streamline the process of sharing files between teachers and students.
Director of the NTRC Apollo Knights said the funds for the equipment donated come from the monies which the local Digicel and Flow companies pay to the NTRC.
Minister with responsibility for Information Technology and Area Representative for East St. George the Hon. Camillo Gonsalves said that training will be provided to the teachers on how to use the Google classroom, which will then be passed to the students. He added that he wants students to have full access to technology, and to be able to use technology for their development. He also urged to students to take care of the equipment.
Principal of the School Corselle Smith expressed her gratitude for the equipment noting that the equipment will be used for the development of teachers and students. The Computers she said will be housed in the schools resource room so that teachers and students can have easy access.
