(By Ernesto Cooke) – Health authorities in St Vincent and the Grenadines are now grappling with an outbreak of COVID-19 at the islands lone mental health facility.
The facility now has 94 COVID-19 positive patients and Nine infected staff members.
Cases By Date
Friday, February 26 – Health officials announced 23 positive cases, Twenty One patients, Two staff.
Saturday, February 27, 20 cases. Eighteen patients and Two staff tested positive,
Sunday, February 28, Forty-Nine cases. Forty-Seven patients and Two staff tested positive.
Tuesday, March 2, 12 cases. Eight patients and Three staff and one contact from the Mental Health Rehabilitation Centre (MHRC).
Quarantine
Health officials say Isolation and quarantine measures have been implemented and additional testing to ensure containment of any further spread in the facility.
On Friday, the first batch of positive patients was moved to an isolation centre in a residential area on the outskirts of Kingstown.
News784 understands that more positive patients have been moved to another makeshift facility on the capital’s outskirts.
The Mental Health Rehabilitation Centre currently houses over 300 patients with varying psychological issues.
Vaccination
St Vincent, on Wednesday, March 3, launched a full-scale COVID-19 National Vaccination Deployment Programme.
The programme was launched at Victoria Park in Kingstown and Health Centres throughout SVG.
On Monday, the island received 45,600 vaccines from the Indian government.
Total Recorded Cases
St. Vincent and the Grenadines recorded its first case of COVID-19 on March 11, 2020.
As of March 1, 2021, St Vincent had recorded sixteen hundred and twenty-eight cases (1628) of COVID-19 and eight deaths.

Globally, as of 10:18 am CET, 3rd March 2021, there have been 114,315,846 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 2,539,427 deaths, reported to WHO.
