The MV Van Oord, a vessel used for dredging, has arrived in St. Vincent to commence work south of Argyle. The materials dredged, will be used to fill the base of the modern port in Kingstown.
Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves told API on Monday that the bathymetric study was finished and that the vessel to be used for dredging the materials had arrived.
Aecon Group, which was awarded the contract to construct the port, said it would take 1.17 million cubic meters of sand from an area 820 yards south of and 550 yards from the Argyle International Airport.
Dredging work will be carried out over a 10-week period if the weather is favorable.
On Monday evening, the St. Vincent government inked a $20 million agreement with Canadian company Aecon, paving the way for material dredging to begin.
On Monday afternoon, Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves told the St. Vincent Times that Aecon will pay $5 million upon signing, $5 million next week, and $10 million when the dredging is completed.
