Due to increased taxes that went into effect on March 1 on certain items, some sweetened beverages, cigarettes, and alcohol will cost higher in Grenada.
Five percent value added tax (VAT) is applied on sweetened drinks.
Any beverages with only natural sweeteners, 100% natural fruit/vegetable juices, milk- and soy-based preparations for newborn use, and nutritional supplements meant to support diets are free from the sugar tax.
The excise duty on cigarettes would increase from 105 percent to 200 percent, while the tax on alcohol will change from EC$1.10 and EC$4.40 per litre to EC$1.50 and EC$5 per litre, respectively.
Beer, wine, whiskey, rum, brandy, vodka, gin, liqueur, cigars, cheroots, and cigarettes are among the products that will pay a higher tax.
Rubber alcohol and other alcohol-based goods like hand sanitizers are exempt from this surcharge.
Individuals in the creative sector will not be required to pay VAT, excise taxes, or customs duties on the equipment and other supplies they buy to launch or grow their businesses.
Creatives and organizations must register with the Grenada Office of Creative Affairs in order to be eligible for the tax exemption (GOCA).
