Guyana’s Opposition Leader, Azruddin Mohamed, and two companions remain in police custody following a confrontation in Kitty, during which their vehicle was reportedly shot at while attempting to film police security outside a senior officer’s private residence.
Mohamed, along with Eugene Thorne and Mario Mohamed, was arrested and taken to the Kitty Police Station. Mohamed has alleged that he was assaulted during the arrest and that a firearm subsequently reported found in his vehicle was planted by police officers.
According to reports reaching Kaieteur News, Mohamed and his companions were driving along Barr Street, Kitty, near the home of Senior Superintendent Prem Narine, Head of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) Special Branch. The occupants were attempting to record video footage highlighting what Mohamed described as a misuse of state resources through heavy police security deployed at Narine’s personal property.
During their second pass around the block, between five to seven gunshots were allegedly fired at the vehicle. Fearing for their lives, Mohamed’s driver sped away from the scene. Examination of the vehicle revealed three bullet strikes and visible ballistic damage.
The vehicle was intercepted at the junction of Sandy Babb Street and Vlissengen Road by a police pickup truck. Senior Superintendent Narine—who previously labeled Mohamed a “threat to national security” during court extradition proceedings involving Mohamed and his father—personally exited the police vehicle. Narine allegedly discharged additional shots toward the car and forced the occupants out at gunpoint.
Witness accounts indicate that Mohamed, Thorne, and Mario Mohamed were beaten at the scene before being taken into custody.
Following the interception, Narine and his team transported the vehicle to the Kitty Police Station. While initial checks of the vehicle yielded no illegal items, police later reported discovering a firearm inside the car after its arrival at the station. Mohamed has vehemently denied ownership of the weapon, alleging that it was planted by Narine and his officers during transit.
All three men remain detained at the Kitty Police Station, where Attorney-at-Law Siand Dhurjon is present representing them.
