Tourists and residents who are climbing La Soufriere from the eastern side of the island are currently compelled to utilise the rear section of the lavatory facilities located at the base of the volcano in Georgetown. These facilities have not been reopened since the volcanic eruption in 2021.
According to taxi operators, in exceptional situations, visitors are required to utilise the adjacent wild area to alleviate themselves.
Travis Harry shared a video on social media showcasing a large quantity of toilet paper and sanitary napkins located at the rear of the property.
The facility has been formally closed for reconstruction, according to Carlos James, Minister of Tourism, who spoke with the St Vincent Times on Monday.
“Those sites are actually closed. The trails are under rehabilitation. So instead of doing the bathrooms first, they were restoring the trails. And they’re going to obviously do the bathrooms. In fact, the trail is partially, if not nearly, completed on the windward side. And on the leeward side, they are about 70% finished”.
“When I checked, they told me they were going to address that as quickly as they could because I realised that people are still using La Soufriere even though the site is officially closed for repairs”.
