St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves, says steps are being taken to stop the rise in Yacht related crimes at anchorages on the mainland and in the Grenadines.
Gonsalves confirmed the rise in yacht-related crimes when addressing concerns about the economic impact on the tourism sector in the House of Assembly on Tuesday 13 December.
“The Coast Guard base at Bequia has been strengthened, according to the Prime Minister, and there has been an increase in police presence in areas where yachts dock both on the mainland and in the Grenadines”.
“On land and at sea, the Coast Guard has strengthened patrols. For example, in the case of Bequia, the Deputy Director of Grenadines Affairs has relocated to a different location so that we can better accommodate the Coast Guard officers at the base in Bequia. There have been additional actions taken that I won’t discuss, but there has been a really concerted effort to eradicate this specific type of illegal activity“.
