St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) has submitted a proposal to serve as a host nation for a number of Super 8-T20 cricket matches scheduled for June 2024.
The statement was made by Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves on Monday, the 21st. During his address at the Carnival prize-giving ceremony.
It has been reported that the forthcoming 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup is slated to take place from June 4 to 30 of the following year. This tournament is set to be held in the Caribbean and the USA, encompassing a total of 10 locations.
“We have applied for the month of June 2024 for one of the super eight sections of World Cup T20 cricket. And we are preparing, and we are confident that Saint Vincent and the Grenadines may win one of those Super Eight bids”.
In July, a delegation from the International Cricket Council (ICC) conducted inspections of selected locations that have been designated to hold the inaugural international global cricket event.
On Monday, Gonsalves said that the anticipated cost of improvement for the sporting facility, in light of a potentially successful bid, amounts to a sum in the millions.
“We have a cost of US $12 million that would be required for us to upgrade the Arnos Vale sporting complex, and I am setting out to upgrade it between now and early 2024”.
The 2024 World Cup format will differ from the previous two editions (2020-21 in the UAE and 2022 in Australia), in which the opening round was followed by Super 12s. For the first round next year, the 20 teams will be divided into four groups of five, with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the Super 8s.
The Super 8 teams will be divided into two groups of four, with the top two from each group progressing to the semi-finals.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed in November 2021 that the T20 competition would be staged jointly by the West Indies and the United States.
The United States of America will host a major ICC tournament for the first time. A total of 55 matches will be contested between the 20 competing teams for the coveted championship.
So far, 15 teams have qualified for the tournament. The West Indies and the United States automatically qualified for the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The ICC T20 World Cup qualifying matches, which are set to take place from September 30 to December 1, 2023, will determine the remaining 5 teams (two from Asia, two from Africa, and one from America’s qualifier).
India, Pakistan, Australia, South Africa, England, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Scotland, Ireland, the Netherlands, and Papua New Guinea are among the other eligible teams.
