Ambassador Fiona Fan Responds to False Claims Regarding Taiwan’s Sovereignty
The Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Fiona Huei-Chun FAN, has addressed recent false statements made by the People’s Republic of China (PRC) Ambassador to Dominica.
These statements pertain to the speech by Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Ralph Gonsalves, which expressed support for Taiwan and peace across the Taiwan Strait.
The claims falsely declare that “the PRC Government naturally has and exercises China’s full sovereignty, including the sovereignty of Taiwan…” and misinterpret the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758.
Ambassador FAN strongly protests and condemns these false claims. She reiterates that neither the Republic of China (Taiwan) nor the PRC is subordinate to the other; emphasizing that the Chinese communist regime has never governed Taiwan. She affirms that no distortion of Taiwan’s sovereign status can change the internationally recognized status quo across the Taiwan Strait.
Ambassador FAN also clarifies that UNGA Resolution 2758 does not mention Taiwan and is unrelated to Taiwan. She stresses that the resolution neither reflects nor equates to China’s so-called “one China principle.” In light of China’s continued misrepresentation of this resolution and its attempts to mislead the international community, Taiwan urges countries worldwide to collectively counter China’s unfounded claims.
Ambassador FAN emphasizes that Taiwan remains firmly committed to freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in cooperation with the nation’s people and diplomatic allies to contribute to global peace and prosperity for all. Not to mention that Taiwan has clearly demonstrated to the international community how its goodwill could be used to help others. Taiwan is a force for good and a reliable and responsible member of the international community.
Taiwan and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines share fundamental values of democracy and freedom. Since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1981, the two nations have enjoyed a strong and mutually respectful friendship, underpinned by fruitful cooperation in various fields.
Taiwan looks forward to working with SVG to further deepen exchanges and partnerships in areas such as infrastructure, agriculture, ICT, public health, education, and more. Together, we aim to contribute to the mutual benefit and prosperity of our people.
